The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards , hosted by Kevin Hart, was an award show that took place Thursday, September 6, 2012, honoring the best music videos of the year. The awards were broadcast from the Staples Center arena at L.A. Live in Downtown Los Angeles. Nominations were announced on July 31, 2012. Rihanna and Drake received five nominations, while Katy Perry and Beyoncé received four. Nicki Minaj received three nominations, and won one award.[1] It was confirmed that Minaj would perform live at the Staples Center with a secret guest, while her tourmate 2 Chainz will make his VMA debut.[2] This was the first time Nicki performed on the main stage. The first was at the pre-show back in 2010.
